Where this stands

Everything below comes from what Ryan remembers. A "?" marks a detail he wasn't fully sure of — a name, a birth order, or a relationship worth double-checking with family.

Verified on Ancestry.com (using Ryan's login): once logged in, several key records turned up and cross-confirmed each other — matching names, ages, spouses, and places Ryan had already given from memory. Details are cited inline below with a § mark. A general public search (no login) had turned up nothing usable beforehand — Gordon and Strobel are both common surnames, and without exact dates or an authenticated account, results were unreliable.

Confirmed by Ryan: Mary Belle passed away around 1978 (his own tree's records suggest 1975), and Ralph married June sometime after. Donald, after divorcing Cleo, married Gertrude (now identified as Gertrud Marianne Schugger). Cleo Buechner's parents and siblings are now confirmed too (below). Patricia and Harold are individually identified below (Harold Calvin Strobel); Dewey and Fred Barton are confirmed as Rosemary's full brothers.

New: the "GordonStrobel" tree. Ryan built out a second Ancestry family tree of his own, named "GordonStrobel," with a lot more depth on both sides. It resolved several open questions at once: it names Maris Gordon and Elisabeth Jane Blakely outright as William Blakely Gordon's parents (matching this document's own probable identification), adds Maris's own parents and siblings, gives Elisabeth's father and siblings and her full set of seven children with second husband Simon Proctor, and adds a previously-unknown second son, Ellis Gordon, who died young. On the Strobel side it identifies Donald Strobel's parents for the first time, confirms Harold as Harold Calvin Strobel, and turns up two more of Ellen's aunts (Esther and Kathleen) that weren't known before. It also identifies Rosemary Barton's parents and confirms her brothers' identities. A few of its facts conflict with what independent record searches had found earlier – noted inline where that happens – since some entries in Ryan's tree cite other Ancestry members' public trees rather than original records, which are worth double-checking rather than treating as settled.

Full Directory

Every named relative, grouped by generation, with their relation to Ryan.

Brittanie's family (Mough-Britt line)

Harry A. Mough
Great-grandfather (Mough side). Father of James Andrew Mough Sr., per Ancestry.com's Social Security index.
Mary C. McCabe
Great-grandmother (Mough side).
Simon T. Britt
Great-great-great-grandfather (Britt side). Born about 1813 near Raleigh, North Carolina, per his son Elias's own Confederate biographical questionnaire; found in Henry County, Tennessee in 1840, then farming in Saline Township, Sevier County, Arkansas by 1850. Died 1860 near Lockesburg, Sevier County; will probated there 7 May 1860. Held several Arkansas land patents, 1855–1860; also has a Confederate service record. Ancestry's land-office index separately gives his own middle name as "Turnage" – unconfirmed whether that connects to Dicey's family. His own parents are not named in any record found; even Elias's questionnaire, filled out decades later, left that line blank.
Dicie Ann Turnage
Great-great-great-grandmother (Britt side). Born about 1815–1820 in North Carolina; died in early 1866, Sevier County, Arkansas (probate filings 3 & 31 Jan 1866). Found with Simon and eight children in the 1850 Arkansas census; by 1860 she was head of household, farming with $3,600 in real estate. Her maiden name and her marriage to Simon are both confirmed by her son Elias's own Confederate biographical questionnaire, filed with the Arkansas History Commission, which names her as Simon's wife and gives her maiden name in his own hand. Her own parents remain unconfirmed after a targeted search of NC marriage, birth, and probate records – and the same questionnaire that named her left her parents' line blank too. The circumstantial trail (a Joseph Turnage in the 1830 Pitt/Greene Co. census, an independent Britt–Turnage marriage in Pitt Co., and a namesake niece born there in 1855) points toward the Pitt/Greene County, NC Turnage families without confirming a direct link.
Elias Lafayette Britt
Great-great-grandfather (Britt side). Born 22 Aug 1842 in Henry County, Tennessee – per his own Confederate biographical questionnaire, filed with the Arkansas History Commission and signed in his own hand while living at Mineral Springs, Howard County, Arkansas. The fifth of Simon and Dicey's known children (listed as "Elias," age 8, in 1850 and age 17 in 1860). Married Mollie Stuart in 1881 in Howard County, Arkansas – almost certainly Thomas Sr.'s biological mother – then later married S. E. "Ellen" Bradford in 1896, who appears as his wife in the 1900 census.
Mollie Stuart
Great-great-grandmother (Britt side). Married Elias Lafayette Britt 22 Dec 1881, Howard County, Arkansas; likely Thomas Sr.'s biological mother.
S. E. "Ellen" Bradford
Elias's second wife, married 27 Feb 1896, Pike County, Arkansas. Recorded as his wife in the 1900 census, along with her daughter from an earlier marriage, Bulah Bradford.
Rosa Britt & Rena Britt
Thomas Sr.'s half-sisters (Elias & Ellen's daughters), per the 1900 census (ages 19 and 12).
James Andrew Mough (grandfather)
Brittanie's paternal grandfather. Born 30 Apr 1932, Akron, Ohio; died 18 May 1992, San Francisco. Married Joy Ann Shedwill, 25 Oct 1953, Santa Clara, CA. Verified via Ancestry.com.
Joy Ann Shedwill
Brittanie's paternal grandmother.

Birtha Roberts
Great-grandmother (Britt side).
Thomas Benjamin Britt (grandfather)
Brittanie's maternal grandfather, same name as his father. Born 14 May 1924, Haworth, Oklahoma; died 25 Sep 1986, Palo Alto, California. The family settled in Stockton, California. Verified via Ancestry.com.
Virginia Doris Lawson
Brittanie's maternal grandmother.
Benjamin Franklin Britt
Ginny's brother – Brittanie's uncle (found via Ancestry.com).
Ryan Mough
Brittanie's younger brother, born 20 Dec 1982.

Great-grandparents

Ralph Max Gordon
Great-grandfather (paternal). Born 10 Feb 1909, Nebraska; died 23 Feb 1994, Salem, Oregon. An osteopath physician. Verified via Ancestry.com.
Mary Belle Sampson
Great-grandmother (paternal), Ralph's wife as of the 1940 census. Ryan had recalled "Towers"; Ancestry records point to Sampson instead. She died around 1978; Ralph remarried a woman named June afterward.
June
Ralph Max Gordon's second wife, married a while after Mary Belle's death.
Herman A. Buechner
Great-grandfather (maternal). Born 2 Mar 1884, Big Stone City, South Dakota; died 9 Jul 1955, Lemmon, South Dakota. Verified via Ancestry.com.
Avilda M. Moe
Great-grandmother (maternal). Married Herman in 1925.

Great-great through great-great-great-great-great-great-grandparents (Gordon side)

Roy Max Gordon
Great-great-grandfather (paternal). Born 29 May 1881, Lewis, Cass County, Iowa; died 17 Jul 1956, Hebron, Thayer County, Nebraska, where he managed a lumber yard. Ryan recalled him as Ralph's father, then recalled "Walter" as the next generation back – records instead show Walter Price Gordon as Roy's older brother, Ralph's great-uncle. Verified via Ancestry.com (Find a Grave, census, and draft cards).
Agnes C. Gordon
Great-great-grandmother (paternal), Roy's wife per the 1920 census.
Harlan S., Helen & Dorothy E. Gordon
Ralph's siblings, per the 1920 census (ages 13, 9, and 2 that year).
William Blakely Gordon
Great-great-great-grandfather (paternal). Born 24 May 1852 in Ohio; died 24 Feb 1904, buried in Pawnee City, Pawnee County, Nebraska. Farmed in Pleasant Township, Cass County, Iowa in 1880. His own parents were both born in Pennsylvania per the 1880 census, matching the family's remembered Westmoreland-area PA roots.
Maria Harlan
Great-great-great-grandmother (paternal). Married William Blakely Gordon 6 Dec 1871, Cass County, Iowa; died 1919.
Margaret Burgess Gordon
William Blakely Gordon's other wife per Find a Grave; it's unclear which of his children, if any, were hers rather than Maria's.
Ellis Gordon
William Blakely Gordon's younger brother. Born 1853, Ohio; died before 1870 (age <17). Newly identified from Ryan's "GordonStrobel" tree; grew up alongside his Proctor half-siblings after their mother's remarriage.
Elisabeth J. Blakeley Proctor (Elizabeth Gordon)
William Blakely Gordon's mother, born 15 Sep 1828 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (per Ryan's "GordonStrobel" tree, matching what Ryan originally recalled). Died 1891 (11 Jun per Find a Grave, or 12 Mar per Ryan's tree – unreconciled), buried Seaton Cemetery, Hamilton County, Nebraska. In 1850 she was living as Elizabeth Gordon in Washington Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, already married to Maris Gordon; she remarried Simon Quinn Proctor in Belmont County, Ohio in 1854 (2 Feb per an independent marriage record, or 11 May per Ryan's tree), and had seven more children under the Proctor surname: Alice Ann, Emma Virginia, Walter Carl, Elmer Ellsworth, Sherman, Charles Calvin, and John Oscar. Her father was Andrew Thomas Blakely (1791–1860); her siblings included Mary A. Blakely (1830–1911, the "Mary" in the 1850 census household), John Gilchrist Blakely (1842–1915, born Perry County, Ohio) and Thomas J. Blakeley (b. 1854). Her obituary (Aurora Sun, 1891) says she left six sons and two daughters.
Maris (Mares) Gordon
Great-great-great-great-grandfather (paternal). Born 1824 in Pennsylvania; a waggoner living in Washington Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1850 with wife Elizabeth (Blakely) and two of her sisters. Identified from Ryan's recollection of a name like "Maris" or "Mares" Gordon; Ryan's own "GordonStrobel" tree now names him and Elizabeth outright as William Blakely Gordon's parents, though no direct marriage record for the two of them, and no source at all for his death, has yet turned up – so treat it as a very strong probable match rather than fully certain. Per that tree he died in 1853 in Ohio, the year after William's birth.
Walter Price Gordon & Harry Paul Gordon
Roy's brothers (1877–1955 and 1891–1965). The 1880 census also shows two more brothers, James H. and John, not linked on Find a Grave.
William K. Gordon
Great-great-great-great-great-grandfather (paternal), probable. Born 1801, died 1874. Identified from Ryan's "GordonStrobel" tree as Maris Gordon's father; no primary source yet attached.
Priscilla P. Mentze
Great-great-great-great-great-grandmother (paternal), probable. Born 1802, died 1885. William K. Gordon's wife per Ryan's tree.
Robert Alexander, William Kidd, Charlotte S. & Joseph Gordon
Maris Gordon's siblings, per Ryan's tree: born 1830 (Lancaster, PA), 1831 (Wheeling, WV), 1840 and 1842 (both Virginia) – tracing the family's migration west in that decade.
Jacob Gordon
Great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather (paternal), probable. Born about 1775. William K. Gordon's father per Ryan's tree; almost nothing else is recorded about him, including his wife's name.

Great-great-grandparents (Barton & Strobel side)

Dewey Samson Barton Sr.
Rosemary Barton's father. Born 9 May 1898, Galesburg, Illinois; died 10 Oct 1952, Portland, Oregon. Identified from Ryan's "GordonStrobel" tree, which resolves an earlier ambiguity – the "Dewey" the family remembered as Rosemary's brother is actually Dewey Jr. (below), not the father.
Ethel Elizabeth Towers
Rosemary Barton's mother. Born 1911, died 1996. Married Dewey Sr. 4 Sep 1932, Walla Walla, Washington (his second marriage).
John J. Strobel
Donald Strobel's father. Died 1 Jan 1969, Eureka, South Dakota (born 1892). Identified from Ryan's "GordonStrobel" tree.
Freida Stein
Donald Strobel's mother. Born 1903, died 2 May 1951, Eureka, South Dakota.

Robert Max Gordon
Paternal grandfather. Born 29 Aug 1931, Kirksville, Missouri; died 18 Dec 1999, Las Vegas, Nevada. The family lived in Estes Park, Colorado by 1940, which likely explains the "born in Colorado" memory. Verified via Ancestry.com.
